Three layers of the internet

The word “web” refers to the pages you see when your device is online and the internet is the network of connected computers that the web works on. The world wide web can be divided into three layers ,the surface web, deep web, and the dark web.

The Surface Web:

The surface is the part of the web that everyone has easy access to. It can be searched through using common search engines such as Google,Yahoo, and Bing. It is under constant surveillance by governments across the world and is relatively small in size as it only makes up approximately 4-5% of the world wide web.

The Deep Web:

The deep web is the largest part of the world wide web, making up approximately 90% of the world wide web. The deep web unlike the surface web cannot be accessed through common search engines. The deep web content includes emails, private content, electronic bank statements and other content accessible over the internet but not indexed by search engines.

The Dark Web:

The dark web refers to the encrypted online content that is not indexed by common search engines and requires a special network to access.  ( Such as Tor “The Onion Routing” Project) It accounts for approximately 5-6% of the world wide web. It is not illegal to access the dark web, however it is illegal to use the dark web to carry out illegal acts. The dark web contains everything from whistleblowing sites to academic research content, uncensored news, illegal markets etc.. It is best to keep your identity hidden while accessing the dark web as not all websites on the dark web are considered safe. By default , the tor network is designed to make it harder for anyone to track you but it is recommended to use a VPN in combination with Tor to enhance your level of security and anonymity while accessing the dark web.
