Protect Yourself From Phishing

What is phishing?

Phishing is the fraudulent act of impersonating a legitimate organization through the use of emails, fake websites, SMS messages amongst other things. It is used to induce individuals to reveal personal information such as passwords and credit card numbers.

What is a domain name?

Domain names are used to identify one or more IP addresses. It is used with an extension to represent the type of company it belongs to. For example, the “.com” domain extension refers to company websites whereas the “.gov” extension refers to government organizations. This extension is referred to as the “Top Level Domain” (TLD).

How to protect yourself?

In order to protect yourself from website and email phishing attempts , one must first learn how to read domain names properly. The main domain names are in bold.

froopledesign@example.com

An easy way to identify the domain name is to find the last string of text followed by a “.” and another string (the TLD). It is important to confirm that you are inputting your passwords into the proper domain name in order to avoid your passwords being sent to the scammer behind the phishing email or website which could look identical to the actual email/website. Also keep in mind that banks are known to have a policy to never ask for your information through an email or text message.
